Suunto App

Frequently Asked Questions

BEFORE YOU GET STARTED:

All of the watches (Ambit onwards) have a way to connect to the app:

  • either via Bluetooth: Ambit3, Traverse, Spartan and Suunto 3,5,7 and 9.
  • or via USB cable and SuuntoLink: Ambit and Ambit2, but also Ambit3 and Traverse collections as an addition to the Bluetooth sync.

Getting started:

  1. Download the Suunto app for your iOS or Android phone and create a new account (if you do not have one already). Alternatively, you can use an already existing Sports Tracker account.
  2. Pair your watch with the app and get acquainted with the new interface and all of the great customizing features the Suunto app has to offer. The app is fairly easy to navigate: the lower icon bar will guide you through the main options, such as Home, your Profile and your training & daily insights and Maps to create exciting new routes for your activities.

Note: Suunto Movescount and Suunto app are different platforms, making it impossible to log into the Suunto app with your Movescount credentials, but you can create the Suunto app account with the email address you used in Movescount. It is also important to remember that you can create a new Suunto app account only in the mobile app.

How to connect and sync via Bluetooth:

  • Pair your device to the Suunto app. After the watch and the phone are connected, the sync of information starts automatically.
  • Tap the watch icon in the upper part of the app screen and check out the sync progress.
  • All the synced information will be available in your Diary. By tapping any exercise you can check the in-detail information of your training.
  • The sync between your watch and your phone starts automatically when you open the app provided the Bluetooth of both your phone and watch is activated and they are in the working range.

How to connect and sync via USB cable and SuuntoLink:

In case you own an Ambit (1,2,3) or a Traverse watch after you have created an account, these are the next steps to follow:

  • Download, install and open SuuntoLink on your computer.
  • Connect your watch to your computer via the supplied USB cable.
  • SuuntoLink will recognize your device and will ask for your Suunto app credentials in case you have unsynced exercises.

Note: You can only Log in with an already created Suunto app account (see above). You cannot create a new account in SuuntoLink.

  • SuuntoLink will ask you to connect to your Movescount account to sync the sport modes or routes to your watch.
    1. If you have a Movescount account, use it to connect SuuntoLink to it.
    2. If you do not have a Movescount account, click Register.

The recommendations below apply to the following watches: Spartan Collection, Suunto 5, Suunto 7 and Suunto 9.

Keywords:

Popular starting point – while you check out the heatmap, you will come across several frequented spots by our community to start their training.

Popular routes – select an area on the map and search for the most frequented routes our community members are also using in their training.

Route – is the path you created or decided to take to get from point A (the starting point or the popular starting point you just saw) to point B (the endpoint).

Waypoint – is a really helpful way to guide yourself easily with your Suunto watch.

.gpx – just in case you already found a track you want to follow and you don’t know how to add it to the Suunto app or export it from the Suunto app and use it with another service.

The Suunto app has received various improvements that will improve your training considerably. Here are the more important things you can do and you need to know about to benefit from its development:

  • Check out the best places for your activities.

Regardless of where you are and what your plan is, take your phone out and use the Suunto app to find the best routes for your next adventure. You can either tap the map preview on the home view of the Suunto app or the map icon in the access bar. Both will open up a map with the following options:

  • Map style/ map type: select the map that highlights the details you are interested in.

    imageetfzf.png

  • Heatmap: select the activity for which you want the heatmap, it will be displayed on top of the map style you are currently using.

       IMG_9CE0544AEE32-1.jpg

  • My tracks: show the tracks you have covered this week, month, or year. You can view your tracks on any map type.

IMG_F9624E024616-1.jpg

  • Popular starting points: show the possible start or end of a route you might want to create. They are visible only on the heatmap.

According to your location, the Suunto app will also generate the popular routes of the area. You can select the sport you are interested in routes for and go through all of the routes available in the area of your search.

Tap on any of the popular routes, rename it so it’s easier to identify it, edit the suitable activity type (optional) and Save it to your route gallery and sync it to your watch.

  • Create, import, and export exciting routes for your training.

After you have checked out where other people are training and you know where you want to go, you can create your route or import it (.gpx format).

This is how you create a route on the Suunto app for iOS/Android and this is how you import a .gpx file in the Suunto app for iOS/Android

You can also add waypoints to your route and rename* them so they reflect the pit stops you are interested in or can use waypoints to mark turns along the route to easily navigate with your watch.

* available for Suunto 5, Suunto 9, and the Spartan collection.

Do you want to use the route or the recorded data you have in the Suunto app with another service?

You can export both the .gpx file (1) and the .fit file (2) of your training from the Suunto app.

  1. Open your saved routes gallery and tap the Share buttonScreenshot 2020-08-26 at 17.17.03.png. Send the .gpx file to a friend, AirDrop it, save it to your Files, or your Google Drive. Additionally, you can go to your exercise, tap the “More” (three dots), and save the route to the gallery.
  2. Open any training you recorded, tap the “More” icon, and select to Export as .FIT file. Send the .FIT file to a friend, AirDrop it, save it to your Files, or your Google Drive.

Screenshot 2020-08-26 at 17.29.43.png

  • Manage the routes you have already saved and share them with your training buddies or the community.

You can always double-check the routes you have available, you can also share them in case you and your buddies want to train on the same trail. It also helps our community create more useful recommendations for other Suunto users.

Tap to open their exercise, tap on the “More” button (three dots), and save that trail to your gallery of routes. Don’t forget to show some support and give a shout out to your friend.IMG_C27602FB4532-1.jpg

Make sure you have synchronized your watch with the Suunto app after all of the changes you have made, otherwise the changes will not reflect in the watch.

The Movescount exercise history transfer is an important part of our digital service transition. It is intended to be enabled once as you take Suunto app into use.

We started a gradual roll-out to our community back in May of 2019 by enabling the transfer for Suunto 9, Spartan, Ambit3, Traverse and Traverse Alpha family watches and EON Dive computers.

The service is now enabled for all the Suunto users to import their Movescount history to Suunto app. Make sure you have downloaded the app.

The transfer might take some time depending on how much information there is to transfer.

How to get started?

  1. Ensure you have paired your Suunto with Suunto app and have notifications enabled.
  2. When you receive the notification, you’ll be able to start the transfer – the app will guide you through the flow:
iOS: Open Profile > Connect to other services and check if Movescount is there.

    iOS_Helpshift - Settings.png

Android: Open Settings > Connect to other services and check if Movescount is there.

    Android_Helpshift - Settings.png
  3. After entering your Movescount credentials, the data import will start automatically, and your Moves will be added to your Diary in Suunto app. This can take between several minutes and several days, depending on the volume of data being transferred by the community at a given point in time.
  4. We will send you an e-mail confirmation when the transfer is completed.

Do you think you missed our notification? You can always check under Connect to other services if the transfer is already available for you, if you see the Movescount icon, it is available.

Do you see duplicate Moves in Suunto app? If you have used Suunto app and Movescount in parallel and synced to both services, it may happen that some Moves are imported and create duplicates. If this is the case, we kindly ask you to manually delete the duplicate: Select the activity, tap Edit and Delete.

What do I need to know?

  • The transfer is only one way – Movescount to Suunto app.
  • The data transfer is intended to be done only once.
It will contain all Moves that have been synced to Movescount prior to the moment you start the transfer.
  • Imported exercises will be private by default in Suunto app.
Public exercises from Movescount will remain a data source for Heatmaps.
  • Moves synchronized after enabling the transfer will not be synchronized to Suunto app.
  • You can continue using Movescount after enabling the transfer. Just make sure to sync your watch with both Movescount web and Suunto app separately.
  • Moves that have been deleted in Movescount after May 2019 will be transferred to Suunto app and may still appear in the Diary. If this is the case, we kindly ask you to manually delete them in Suunto app.
  • For Suunto app for iOS to refresh the Diary overview and display imported Moves, please bring the app again the foreground or close and re-open the app.
  • If you are using partner services like Strava, TrainingPeaks or other, please know:

    1) If you sync to both Suunto app and Movescount in parallel and have a partner service connected from both Movescount and Suunto app, please disconnect from the partner service in Suunto app before you start the transfer to avoid having duplicates in the partner service.

    2) After enabling the Move history transfer, please make sure to only sync from either Movescount or Suunto app to the partner service to avoid duplicates. Please disconnect from the partner service through Movescount under Settings > Other sports services.
Continue to sync with the partner using Suunto app.

One of my Moves is missing or the data is incorrect. What shall I do?

Ensure you received the confirmation that the Movescount history import is complete. If you did not receive it yet, Moves are still on their way to Suunto app.

If you received the confirmation and Moves are missing from your history, you can re-create them manually in Suunto app. Here is how you do it:

  • Open Suunto app, tap the + icon and choose to Add activity manually. Fill in all available exercise data.

If the exercise data of Moves is incorrect or you need more help, please contact our Support team. We are happy to assist you.

Which data will be transferred?

The data transfer includes your Moves and the associated exercise data including images. Dive data in Suunto app will include dive time and a dive depth graph. All other dive data will not yet be displayed.

Please note, Suunto app may not yet be displaying all exercise and dive data, tables and graphs coming from Movescount. We are continuously enhancing Suunto app with the most relevant features for the entire community.

The data transfer does not include:

  • Personal information including body metrics
    – Suunto 9 and Spartans: Your personal information will be synchronized to Suunto app once you connect your watch with the app.
    – Ambit3 and Traverse watches: Currently it is not possible to synchronize personal information to Suunto app or edit the information in the app.

Currently the following limitations exist when using Suunto app and Movescount at the same time:

  • Synchronizing routes
  • Synchronizing custom sport modes

The Suunto app provides a convenient route planning tool which allows you to synchronize your routes to your Suunto watch. In addition, the Suunto app allows you to create custom sport modes and personalize layouts and data of single exercise displays.

When synchronizing a route or custom sport mode with the Suunto app to your watch, your watch connects to Suunto app. After syncing, you will not be able to sync your activities with Suunto Movescount app and web from then on. In addition, SuuntoLink may have issues connecting to your watch and will not synchronize your workouts with Suunto Movescount.

We recommend using Suunto app to synchronize routes and custom sport modes to your Suunto watch if it has become your primary digital service.

If you synced a route or custom sport mode with Suunto app and would like to continue using Movescount, you will need to restore your watch settings to default values via SuuntoLink:

  1. Connect your watch to the computer using the Suunto USB cable.
  2. Click the cog icon and open Watches.
  3. Click Reset all setting under your watch and confirm.
  4. Click Reset watch.

Note: Restoring default values will erase exercise data that has not synced to Suunto app from your watch. To not lose your exercise data, sync your watch with the Suunto app first and then restore your watch to default values.

Note: It is not enough to delete the route(s) created with the Suunto app from your watch. Once the app is used to write data in the watch, only restoring your watch settings to default values resets the connection.

To change or reset your password:

  1. Open Settings and tap Account settings.

Learn how to use Connected GPS on Suunto 3 Fitness.

Your Suunto 3 utilizes the GPS of your mobile phone and includes your phone’s GPS data in your exercise logs. The accuracy of the GPS data may be influenced by various factors like your phone model and the GPS chip integrated into your phone. Trees, buildings, mountains or any other kind of obstruction that blocks the sky may impact the accuracy of GPS. The way how you hold or carry your phone may also impact the GPS signal quality.

The following tips may help to improve the accuracy of speed and distance measurements with connected GPS:

  • Ensure you have the latest app version installed on your phone
  • Ensure that your phone has a working GPS chip. To check, activate location services, open a map application and check how accurate your position is.
  • We will continue developing the software of your watch and will bring improvements to your watch with future software updates. Ensure you have the latest watch firmware version installed on your watch. To verify, install SuuntoLink on your computer and connect your watch with the supplied USB cable. Download SuuntoLink here.
  • Go outside for starting an exercise (GPS does not work in-doors).
  • Wait until your watch gets location data from your Suunto app before starting an Exercise. The GPS icon on your watch blinks grey while searching and turns green when the connection to your phone’s GPS is established.
  • Ensure you have a clear view of the sky. The view should not be blocked by any kind of obstructions (trees, buildings, mountains, etc.) as the signal strength may be affected.
  • Be aware that carrying your phone in a pocket or backpack may affect the signal strength. We recommend carrying your phone in an outer chest pocket or preferably in your hand or in an armband close to your watch.

Troubleshooting steps

Verify after each step if the connection issue was resolved. If not proceed with the subsequent tips:

  1. Ensure you approved location services for Suunto app in your phone’s privacy settings.
Note: It may take several minutes to acquire a GPS signal.
  2. Reset location services on your phone: Open Settings > Connections > Location. Toggle Location services off and then on again. Ensure, locating method is set to High accuracy and improve the accuracy with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth scanning.
  3. Restart your phone.

Note: The GPS signal strength depends on the quality and age of the GPS receiver included in your phone and the number of GPS satellites orbiting Earth. This and changes in the Earth’s outer atmosphere as well as changing weather patterns influence the GPS signal strength. Therefore, even if you exercise at the same place and with the same settings, the GPS accuracy may vary.

Note: Mobile GPS usage may add to roaming costs depending on your service package. We recommend checking this with your provider.
